About the course<\/h1><\/div>[vc_column_text css=””]Do you need to engineer your protein of interest? Do you wish to employ user-friendly one-stop-shop software tools for the design of mutations and libraries, but do not want to spend time on tedious installations or use the Unix command-line? This interactive course will provide essential theory on different areas of enzyme engineering and hands-on experience with several software tools suitable for mining new enzymes<\/strong>, and engineering the activity<\/strong>, specificity<\/strong>, enantioselectivity<\/strong>, stability<\/strong>, and solubility of enzymes<\/strong>. To remain at the cutting edge of scientific advancements, we will also explore the applications of machine learning<\/strong> techniques and quantum computing<\/strong> in enzyme design.<\/p>\n

On the last day (optional), we will provide knowledge and training on processing experimental kinetic data<\/strong> (NEW<\/strong> this year!)<\/p>\n

You will have the chance to learn from the developers or experienced users of those tools, and discuss the optimal ways to set-up calculations and adequately interpret the results. At the end of this 5-day course, you will be able to design different properties of proteins for your academic research or commercial applications on your own.<\/p>\n

Software and databases covered<\/strong>: AggreProt<\/a>, AlphaFill<\/a>,\u00a0AlphaFold<\/a>, Caver<\/a>, CaverDock<\/a>,\u00a0Caver Web<\/a>, ChannelsDB<\/a>, EnzymeMiner<\/a>, ESMFold<\/a>, FireProt<\/a>, FireProtASR<\/sup><\/a>, FireProtDB<\/sup><\/a>, HotSpot Wizard<\/a>,\u00a0LoopGrafter<\/a>, ProteinMPNN<\/a>, RF Diffusion<\/a>, SoluProt<\/a>,\u00a0SoluProtMut<\/a>DB<\/sup><\/a>, KinTek Explorer<\/a>, DynaFit<\/a>, BioEmu<\/a>, ESM-Flow, Boltz-2<\/a>, Tamarind<\/a>, LigandMPNN<\/a>, and CalFitter<\/a>. Our web-tools integrate multiple individual software, and altogether, you will get automated access to more than 50 computational methods<\/em> and 15 databases<\/em>.[\/vc_column_text]

Who should participate<\/h6><\/div>[vc_column_text css=””]The course is primarily meant for protein and metabolic engineers with no prior experience in computer modeling and bioinformatics<\/strong>. The experts willing to broaden their current computational protein design toolbox will also benefit from this course. Doctoral students, postdocs, and staff members from both academia and companies are welcome.[\/vc_column_text]
Previous editions<\/h6><\/div>[vc_column_text css=””]The 1st<\/sup> Hands-on Computational Enzyme Design Course<\/strong> was hosted in the classical in-person<\/strong> format and took place in Brno, Czech Republic, in February 2020<\/strong>. We had more than 30 participants from 12 countries, about 70% from academia (ex.: Zurich University, KTH Royal Institute, Georgia Institute of Technology) and 30% from industry (ex.: Pfizer, Novartis Pharma, Johnson & Johnson).<\/p>\n

The following editions of the Hands-on Computational Enzyme Design Course were: the 2nd<\/sup>\u00a0in May 2021<\/strong> (online<\/strong>), the 3rd<\/sup>\u00a0in May 2022 <\/strong>(online<\/strong>), the 4th<\/sup>\u00a0in May 2023<\/strong>\u00a0(hybrid mode<\/strong>), the 5th<\/sup> in February 2024<\/strong> (online<\/strong>), and the 6th<\/sup> in June 2025<\/strong> (in-person<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

Over the years, we have trained 311 participants from 40 different countries, both from academia (75%) and industry (25%), and we have granted 10 scholarships.<\/p>\n

The participants learned the background theory of computational enzyme design, practiced the exercises provided and worked on their own problems of interest, always assisted by our team of experts. Knowledge and experience were exchanged in a friendly and interactive environment. The feedback was extremely positive in both on-site and online editions.
