Research interests

Karolina is interested in structural and functional studies of luciferases and bioluminescence. Her main focus is on the bioluminescent apparatus of the brittle star Amphiura filiformis. This organism is also an interesting candidate for unravelling the evolutionary puzzle linking luciferases and dehalogenases. Combining structural information on the mode of action of natural luciferases with that on some recently developed artificial luciferases could further contribute to the fields of biotechnology and biomedicine.
