Research interests

Jan Cesnek is a PhD student investigating the molecular pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease, with a focus on the aggregation and membrane pore-formation of the amyloid beta (A) peptide. His research explores interactions of A with apolipoprotein E (ApoE) and lipid membranes. To study these processes, he develops fluorescence spectrometry assays suitable for both mechanistic studies and drug screening. He also prepares lipid membrane models in the form of small and giant unilamellar vesicles (SUVs and GUVs) to increase the biological relevance of his experiments. By incorporating microfluidic devices, the uniformity and reproducibility of produced GUVs are improved. These GUVs enable visualisation of studied pathological processes at the lipid membrane interface using confocal microscopy.
